Hubert Gyau brace gives Asante Kotoko 4-2 win over Karela

Asante Kotoko bounced back in emphatic fashion, overpowering Karela United 4–2 in an action-packed Ghana Premier League encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors, eager to respond after their CAF Confederation Cup disappointment, produced a dominant attacking display despite missing key forward Albert Amoah, who recently completed a move to Al Ahli Benghazi in Libya.

Midfielder Hubert Gyau set the tone for the afternoon, firing home a stunning opener in the 6th minute. Karela, however, found a quick response through Bless Ege, who levelled the score midway through the first half.

Gyau restored Kotoko’s lead soon after with another brilliant long-range strike, before Seth Kwadwo* powered in a header to make it 3–1 just before the break.

After halftime, Peter Amidu Acquah added a fourth goal from close range to seal the victory for Kotoko. Karela managed to pull one back in the 72nd minute, but it was little more than a consolation as the home side maintained control throughout the contest.

Kotoko’s superiority was reflected in the numbers — 62% possession, 10 total shots with 4 on target, compared to Karela’s 4 attempts and 2 on target.

The result extends Kotoko’s unbeaten start to the league season, with the Kumasi giants now on 11 points from five games and still holding three matches in hand. Their attention now shifts to a highly anticipated showdown with Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium next weekend.

For Karela United, the defeat halts their three-match unbeaten streak and offers a sobering reminder of the competition’s demands.

They remain on 12 points from eight games and will aim to bounce back when they host Dreams FC in their next fixture.
