Ghana Golf Association Empowers Journalists with Technical and Ethical Golf Reporting Skills

The Ghana Golf Association (GGA) has taken a major step toward improving golf coverage in the country by organising a one-day seminar for sports journalists.

The event, held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club in Burma Camp, Accra, brought together media members to deepen their understanding of golf reporting.

The workshop was designed to enhance journalists’ technical knowledge, storytelling skills, and ethical standards when covering golf events.

Participants were introduced to key aspects of the sport, including terminology, scoring systems, game tools, and the rules that govern it.

The General Secretary of the Ghana Golf Association, Mr. Solomon Allotey, led the various sessions, which combined both classroom instruction and hands-on experience on the course.

He explained that the seminar aimed not only to build technical expertise but also to help journalists appreciate the nuances of golf.

“Something, when you come to report on the golf event, don’t just wait for the results alone, you need to be on the court and see the happening there,” Mr. Allotey said.

“Because sometimes, you see when read from outside, they captured your imagination of what happened on the court, not the results. So if you focus solely on the results, we will give it to you because you can’t even interpret it well.”

He also encouraged sports journalists to take up the sport themselves to better understand it, adding that golf scholarships are often available to players.

“With golf scholarships, you must be a player, so if you are a journalist, there are instances when we get scholarships from universities, but if you are not a golfer, we can’t give it to you. You don’t need to be rich before you play golf. You need to come to the golf court and play,” he stated.

Mr. Allotey emphasised that golf is a lifelong sport, playable even in old age, with many enthusiasts playing for fitness, networking, and social connection.

Changing perceptions and growing the game

Mr. Rodney Oddoye, Treasurer of the GGA, also took the opportunity to debunk the myth that golf is a sport only for the wealthy.

“Golf is for the rich? All the best golfers are from Anum or the hard part of Kumasi and the villages surrounding the center of the world — that’s where the best golfers are from,” he said.

He revealed that the Association is working to introduce golf competitions in schools and integrate them into the national sports calendar.

This initiative, he said, would help develop young golfers and offer them pathways to international exposure and educational opportunities.

“We know we have elite young golfers at the national level who we’re building up and fortunately, they are from Anum’s side,” he added.
“A couple of them were on scholarship and went to Scotland this year. We’re hoping the two that we sent will be able to get scholarships to play, learn, and qualify for the American or the UK circuits.”

Strengthening media-golf relations

Mr. Maurice Quansah, Editor of Graphic Sports, also addressed participants, stressing the importance of improving storytelling in golf journalism.

“Storytelling skills in golf reporting must be enhanced,” he said, while also proposing the establishment of a media development fund to support ongoing training and encourage more journalists to take interest in golf coverage.

The seminar ended with an engaging question-and-answer session, during which participants interacted with GGA officials on how to build stronger collaboration between the Association and the sports media.

The one-day event marked a significant step in strengthening the relationship between golf administrators and the country’s media fraternity, setting the stage for richer, more accurate, and more engaging golf coverage in Ghana.
