Accra, Ghana – The curtains fell on the 2025 CAA Region II Seniors Athletics Championship on Tuesday, August 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with host nation Ghana producing moments of brilliance despite finishing fourth overall.
Nigeria topped the table, showcasing their dominance once again in regional athletics.
The two-day competition brought together athletes from 13 countries across West Africa and was widely hailed as a resounding success.
Fans witnessed thrilling contests, personal bests, and even a few history-making performances.
One of Ghana’s biggest highlights came from Rexford Bugase of the Armed Forces, who wrote his name in the record books by clinching the country’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s discus throw with a distance of 51 metres.
His triumph was followed by another golden moment as Mamudu Seidu Baba stormed to victory in the men’s 400m hurdles. In the high jump, Kelvin Adum soared to 2.10 metres to secure yet another gold for Ghana, while Edwin Gadayi clocked 21.14 seconds to claim silver in the men’s 200m final.
In the overall standings, Nigeria reigned supreme with 25 medals: 15 gold, 8 silver, and 2 bronze.
Burkina Faso finished second with 21 medals (7 gold, 10 silver, 4 bronze), while Benin claimed third with 6 gold, 3 silver, and 7 bronze.
Ghana placed fourth, earning a respectable 23 medals in total: 3 gold, 11 silver, and 9 bronze.

The championship not only celebrated medals but also showcased growth in the region’s athletics, with several athletes smashing personal bests and breaking national records.
Speaking after the event, Ghana Athletics Association President Bawa Fuseini praised the successful hosting of the championship but admitted that Ghana’s modest three-gold haul should be a wake-up call for the nation to step up its game.
