Black Satellites Fall to Nigeria in First Group Match of CAF WAFU B U-20 AFCON Qualifiers

Ghana’s Black Satellites suffered a disappointing start to their campaign at the 2026 CAF WAFU B U-20 AFCON Qualifying Tournament, falling 4-2 to arch-rivals Nigeria in their opening Group match at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The much-anticipated Group clash saw Nigeria’s Flying Eagles make a blistering start, taking the lead just six minutes into the contest through Olayemi Ayinla. The early goal gave the defending champions confidence as they dictated proceedings and piled pressure on the Ghanaian defence.

Despite Ghana’s efforts to respond, Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 30th minute through Oraro Lucky before Abdulmuiz Adeleke added a third just before half-time, handing the Flying Eagles a commanding 3-1 lead at the break.

The Black Satellites showed greater determination after the restart and fought to reduce the deficit with two goals, but Nigeria remained composed and dangerous on the counterattack. Adeleke completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to secure a convincing 4-2 victory for the Flying Eagles.

The result gives Nigeria an early advantage in the race for qualification, while Ghana will now have to quickly put the defeat behind them and focus on their next crucial group fixture.

Head coach and his technical team will be eager to address the defensive lapses that proved costly against the Nigerians as they prepare for a must-win encounter against Burkina Faso on July 30.

Although it was a disappointing opening result, the tournament is still in its early stages, and Ghana has an opportunity to revive its qualification hopes with a positive response in the remaining group matches.

The Black Satellites will be hoping to bounce back strongly against Burkina Faso and keep their dream of qualifying for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations alive.
