IFBB President Dr Rafael Santonja Set for Historic Ghana Visit Ahead of 2027 Africa Cup

Ghana’s growing stature in international bodybuilding is set to receive a major boost as International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) President, Dr Rafael Santonja, prepares to visit the country in April 2027 as the guest of honour for the inaugural IFBB Africa Cup.

The visit is expected to mark a significant milestone for the Ghana Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (GBFA), reinforcing the country’s emergence as one of Africa’s rising centres for bodybuilding and fitness development.

Dr Santonja’s trip to Ghana is being hailed as a strong endorsement of the remarkable progress made by the Ghanaian bodybuilding community under the leadership of the Ghana Bodybuilding and Fitness Association, led by President Abdul Hayye Yartey. Over the years, Ghana has consistently produced outstanding athletes who have excelled on both continental and international stages, helping to elevate the country’s reputation within the global bodybuilding fraternity.

Although this will be Dr Santonja’s first visit to Ghana and the wider West African sub-region, he has long championed the growth of bodybuilding across Africa through the IFBB’s development initiatives. His presence is expected to strengthen ties between the international governing body and national federations while opening new opportunities for athletes, coaches, judges and administrators.

Beyond attending the historic Africa Cup, the IFBB President will pay courtesy calls on government officials and other dignitaries, while holding high-level meetings with African bodybuilding leaders, corporate partners and athletes. These engagements are expected to focus on expanding investment, promoting athlete development, enhancing coaching and judging standards, and exploring future international events in Africa.

The 2027 IFBB Africa Cup itself will make history as the first professional bodybuilding competition to be staged in the West African sub-region. Hosting such a prestigious event is expected to attract elite competitors from across Africa and beyond, while showcasing Ghana’s ability to organise world-class sporting events.

A Major Boost for Ghana Bodybuilding

Dr Santonja’s visit is expected to have a lasting impact on bodybuilding in Ghana. It will provide greater international visibility for the country’s athletes, strengthen the credibility of the local federation, and create opportunities for increased sponsorship and investment in the sport.

The visit is also expected to inspire a new generation of bodybuilders, encourage greater youth participation, and accelerate the development of bodybuilding infrastructure and educational programmes. With the backing of the IFBB, Ghanaian athletes could gain improved access to international competitions, training opportunities and professional pathways.

For Ghana, the occasion represents more than hosting a continental championship, it is a statement of the country’s growing influence in African bodybuilding.

As preparations gather pace for the inaugural IFBB Africa Cup in 2027, the anticipated arrival of Dr Rafael Santonja promises to usher in a new chapter for bodybuilding in Ghana and the West African region.
