Five Foreign Coaches Set To Shape Ghana Premier League As Clubs Eye Success

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is set to have a strong international flavour after five clubs appointed foreign head coaches in a bold bid to challenge for honours.

Defending champions Gold Stars FC have placed their trust in Greek tactician Petros Koukouras, who takes charge with the responsibility of defending the club’s historic league title while leading them into continental football.

Record league champions Asante Kotoko have turned to experienced South African coach Eric Tinkler, whose pedigree in the South African Premier Division is expected to help the Porcupine Warriors mount a serious title challenge after recent inconsistent campaigns.

Arch-rivals Hearts of Oak have also looked abroad, appointing Bosnian coach Nebojša Kapor as they seek to restore the club to the summit of Ghanaian football. The Phobians will hope his tactical philosophy can revive a side eager to return to championship-winning form.

Newly promoted Vision FC have named Montenegrin manager Predrag Jeredić to lead the club in what promises to be a demanding first season in the Ghana Premier League. His primary task will be ensuring survival while building a competitive side capable of establishing itself in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Heart of Lions have secured the services of Turkish coach Kasım Gökyıldız, who arrives with the ambition of transforming the Kpando-based club into genuine contenders after their impressive performances in recent seasons.

The appointments underline the growing confidence Ghanaian clubs have in foreign expertise as they look to improve standards, compete consistently for trophies and make a greater impact in CAF inter-club competitions.

Ghana Sports News Take

On paper, Eric Tinkler appears to be the coach with the greatest chance of immediate success. The South African arrives at Asante Kotoko with proven experience, has managed at the highest level in South Africa and inherits one of the country’s biggest clubs, complete with passionate supporters, quality players and the financial backing to compete for silverware.

However, Petros Koukouras at Gold Stars FC should not be overlooked. Taking over the reigning champions gives him a settled squad and the opportunity to build on an already successful foundation, although the challenge of balancing domestic and continental commitments will test his credentials.

Hearts of Oak’s Nebojša Kapor could also become a surprise success if he quickly adapts to the demands of Ghanaian football, while the appointments at Vision FC and Heart of Lions are likely to be judged more on long-term progress than immediate trophies.

With five foreign coaches now on the touchline, the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League promises to be one of the most intriguing and competitive seasons in recent memory.
