The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has underscored the need for early preparation and sustained funding as Ghana intensifies its build-up to the Commonwealth Games.
Speaking in an interview with GH Sports News, Akpokavie delivered a clear message shaped by past experiences on the international stage – talent alone is not enough without proper planning and financial backing.
“The main thing is that we need to be prepared, and preparation is key. And funding is one of the main things,” he stated.
Strategic planning underway
With lessons drawn from previous competitions, the GOC has moved early to engage the Ministry of Sports to secure the necessary support for Team Ghana.
Akpokavie acknowledged the commitment shown by the sector minister, but was quick to stress that government backing must be complemented by broader support systems to ensure the team is competitive on the global stage.
Rather than relying solely on state funding, the GOC is widening its net – actively courting support from both private and public sector stakeholders to strengthen its financial base.
“We are also working towards some funding on our own, to get people to support us also from the private sector and public sector, to add to what the government is going to do,” he explained.
Athletes begin structured build-up
Beyond the boardroom, preparations are already taking shape on the field, with a structured training programme rolled out across multiple disciplines.
Ghana’s boxing team is set for international training tours aimed at sharpening their competitive edge, while the judo contingent – though small in number – is undergoing focused preparation.
One athlete is currently training in France, with the other continuing camp locally.
Swimmers are also benefiting from overseas training opportunities to gain vital exposure, while track and field athletes based in Ghana have begun local training camps as part of their early build-up.
Building towards a stronger showing
The approach reflects a shift towards deliberate planning—combining funding, exposure, and structured training to give Team Ghana a competitive advantage.
Akpokavie remains optimistic that this proactive strategy will translate into improved performances when the time comes.
With preparations gathering momentum, Ghana is positioning itself to not only participate but compete with intent – drawing on past lessons to shape a more confident and prepared campaign at the next Commonwealth Games.
