Ghana’s Sports Minister Congratulates Benjamin Azamati for breaking 22 year old national 100m record to qualify for Tokyo Olympics

Ghana’s Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif has congratulated Benjamin Azamati for breaking Leo Myles- Mills’ 22 year old national record in 100m.

Benjamin Azamati has broken Ghana’s 22 year old 100m record after he run one hundredth of second faster than Leonard Myles-Mills’ 9.98 seconds.

Azamati finished ahead of the pack in heat 8 of the Texas relays on Friday afternoon in a time of 9.97 seconds, and in the process qualified to compete at the Tokyo Olympic games. He also becomes the first NCAADII athlete to run under 10 seconds and broke Darell Green’s 10.08 seconds record set in 1983.

Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif on his Facebook page said;

Congratulations to Benjamin Azamati for his historic 9.97s run, which broke the 22-year old national 100m record held by Leo Myles-Mills and also qualifying him for the Tokyo Olympics.

Azamati’s background as a former school athlete and his remarkable rise to prominence, is the reason we want to revamp and pay more attention to inter-schools competitions to be able to unearth and develop more of such talents for our country.

The former University of Ghana student is also the first man to go sub 10 in the year 2021. He joins John Paul Amoah and Nadia Eke as the Ghanaian sprinters to have qualified so far for the summer Olympics.
