Ghana Sprinters Set the Pace as Azamati and Saminu Blaze Through 100m Heats at Glasgow 2026

Ghana’s sprint stars Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu delivered a statement of intent at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, producing sensational performances to dominate the men’s 100m heats and emerge as the fastest qualifiers.

Azamati stole the spotlight with a blistering run of 10.00 seconds (+1.2m/s), comfortably winning his heat and recording the fastest time of the opening round. The remarkable performance also saw the Ghanaian rewrite Commonwealth Games history by setting the fastest men’s 100m heat ever recorded at the Games.

The 10.00-second effort underlined Azamati’s exceptional form and strengthened his credentials as one of the leading contenders for the Commonwealth title.

Not to be outdone, fellow Ghanaian sprinter Abdul-Rasheed Saminu produced another commanding display, storming to victory in his heat in 10.01 seconds (+1.9m/s). His time ranked second overall behind Azamati, giving Ghana the two quickest performances of the heats.

The duo’s outstanding runs sent a strong message to the rest of the field as they comfortably secured qualification to the next stage of the competition.

With Azamati and Saminu leading the overall standings after the heats, Ghana has emerged as one of the strongest sprinting nations at Glasgow 2026, raising hopes of a medal-winning performance in one of athletics‘ marquee events.
