Hon. Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, made his first official visit to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to assess its core mandate and activities, with a focus on enhancing coordination to promote sports development across the country.
The visit included a policy briefing and a review of the GOC’s key achievements. The Minister expressed appreciation for the GOC leadership’s efforts and encouraged them to continue their diligent work to ensure Ghanaian athletes achieve greater success, thereby boosting national sports development.

Hon. Kofi Adams also announced ongoing discussions with the National Lottery Authority (NLA) Management about increasing the sports fund through a dedicated lottery system. This initiative aims to improve funding for sports infrastructure and athlete welfare, contributing to a stronger sports ecosystem.
“Collaboration is essential for progress,” the Minister emphasized. “The GOC is a vital part of the sports sector.”
Richard Akpokavie, Esq., President of the GOC, briefed the Minister on the organization’s activities, including data collection on athletes and facilities for international competitions, organizing training and capacity-building programs for coaches, athletes, and sports officials, and facilitating scholarships for athletes’ education. He noted that while federations are actively working to win more medals, funding remains a significant challenge.

Akpokavie also praised the recent establishment of the Ghana Sports Fund, which is expected to ease financial constraints in the sports sector. He expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and support.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Ministry’s Chief Director Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, GOC President Richard Akpokavie, and other representatives from the GOC and various sports federations.
