Shatta Wale, King Promise and other top musicians to add colour to the 13th African Games, Accra 2023 opening ceremony

Shatta Wale, King Promise, Pat Thomas, Ebo Taylor and Kamo Mphela, is set to thrill audience at the opening ceremony of the 13th edition of the African Games, Accra 2023.

The event is billed to take place at the newly Commissioned University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday March 8, 2024.

The continental championship is set to kick off with a spectacular official opening ceremony that will showcase the unique cultural heritage, sporting talent of the African continent and its diversity.

The ceremony at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium will bring together the Heads of State, high level dignitaries, athletes, officials and spectators from across the continent to mark the commencement of this awaited special event.

The theme of the 13th African Games is “Experience the African Dream”.

The opening ceremony of the African Games will be graced by H.E. Nana Akufo Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana; H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of African Union Commission; and H.E. Amb. Minata SAMATE CESSOUMA, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS) at the African Union Commission, among others.

Over 49 countries are participating in the highly anticipated 13th African Games, Accra 2023.

Over 13, 000 elites athletes from all over Africa would be competing for honours, while other ls would also be be hoping to pick Sport for this year’s Olympic games in Pairs France.

Games schedule

Sports disciplines like Table Tennis are currently ongoing at the Accra International Conferences Centre.

A total of 30 sporting disciplines features at the 13th African Games, with seven Olympic qualifying sporting disciplines, 16 non- Olympic qualifiers and Steven demonstration sports.

Borteyman Sports complex will host some games including, Badminton, handball, Swimming, Tennis, and non Olympic qualifying games including, Judo, Taekwondo, Karate-do, fencing.

The newly Commissioned University of Ghana Sports Stadium which will host the opening ceremony of the games will host all the track and field events, and Rugby at the UG newly built Rugby park.

The Accra sports Stadium and University of Ghana Sports Stadium will host the men’s football while the women’s competition will be played at the Cape Coast sports Stadium and the Paa Kwasi Ndoum Sports complex.

The Theodosia Okah Hockey stadium will host 10 counties for both the men the women’s Hocking e events with participating countries including, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

Bukom Boxing Arena will host the Boxing events.

The Achimota Oval will host the Cricket events while Cycling which is an Olympic qualifiers will be hosted in Olebu Ablekuma in Accra.

BACKGROUND:

The African Games, owned and organized by the African Union on behalf of its member states, bring together athletes from across the continent every four years, one year before the Olympics. This prestigious event showcases athletic talent, celebrates African cultural values and heritage, and promotes solidarity, and integration. Additionally, the Games offer a crucial and effective platform for fostering youth education, gender equality, and social cohesion, all important milestones for fulfilling some of the Agenda 2063 aspirations of The African We Want.

The Games will be organized in collaboration with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of Africa Sports Confederations (AASC) following a Negotiated Agreement signed in February 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the Management and Organization of the 13th Edition of the African Games.

This important continental event will be marked by the participation of over 4,000 athletes competing in 29 sports disciplines, 8 of which are qualifying to the Paris Olympic in 2024.The 13th African Games will be held in the following cities: Accra, and Cape Cost from 8-23 March 2024.
