Rugby Rising Play Ghana Inspires Girls at OLA SHS with Menstrual Health Education and Rugby Empowerment Programme

The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), through its Rugby Rising Play Ghana initiative and in partnership with the Volta Regional Rugby Association, has reinforced its commitment to empowering young girls by delivering an inspiring outreach programme at OLA Senior High School in Ho.

The initiative, held under the theme “Strong Girls, Bright Futures: Menstrual Health & Teenage Pregnancy,” brought together students, educators, health professionals, rugby administrators and volunteers for a day of education, empowerment and sport.

Designed to address critical issues affecting adolescent girls, the programme provided comprehensive education on menstrual health, teenage pregnancy prevention, personal hygiene, self-confidence and leadership.

The sessions encouraged open discussions, allowing participants to ask questions and gain practical knowledge that will help them make informed decisions about their health, education and future.

Beyond the classroom discussions, the students were introduced to rugby through engaging practical sessions that highlighted the sport’s core values of respect, discipline, teamwork, integrity and resilience.

The activities demonstrated how rugby can serve as more than just a game, offering young people a platform to build confidence, develop leadership skills and unlock new opportunities.

The programme reflects the Ghana Rugby Football Union’s vision of using sport as a catalyst for positive social change, particularly in communities where education and mentorship can transform lives. Through Rugby Rising Play Ghana, the federation continues to create safe spaces where girls are encouraged to dream bigger, overcome barriers and realise their full potential.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Ghana Rugby reaffirmed that empowering girls through education and sport is central to its long-term development agenda.

By combining life skills with rugby, the federation aims to nurture a generation of confident young women capable of becoming leaders within their communities.

The Union expressed profound appreciation to its President, Ms. Rafatu Inusah, whose leadership continues to drive inclusive rugby development across the country. Gratitude was also extended to Rugby Rising Chairperson Ms. Samira Mensah, President of the Volta Regional Rugby Association Ms. Anita Atieku, the management and Physical Education teachers of OLA Senior High School, the facilitators, volunteers and health professionals whose dedication ensured the programme’s success.

Special recognition was given to programme sponsors Kivo, Sunda, and Minimie Atsomo for their invaluable support in advancing the initiative and helping create lasting opportunities for young girls through education, mentorship and sport.
