International Chess Day 2026: Ghana Chess Association President Christiana Ashley Calls for Greater Investment in Chess Development
President of the Ghana Chess Association (GCA), Christiana Ashley, has extended warm wishes to the chess community as the world marks International Chess Day, reaffirming the Association’s commitment to expanding the game across Ghana.
In a message released to commemorate the occasion, Ashley described chess as more than just a game, emphasizing its role in shaping disciplined, resilient, and strategic thinkers capable of contributing to national development.
“On this International Chess Day, I bring you warm greetings from the Executive Council of the Ghana Chess Association. Today we celebrate a game that builds minds, builds character, and builds nations,” she said.
She highlighted the life skills that chess instills, noting that it teaches children focus while helping young people develop patience, strategy, resilience, and respect for others.
“Chess teaches our children focus. It teaches our youth patience, strategy, and resilience. It teaches all of us to think before we act, to respect our opponent, and to rise stronger after every setback,” Ashley added.
The GCA President also expressed gratitude to the various stakeholders whose dedication continues to drive the growth of chess in Ghana.

“To every player in our schools, communities, and clubs, thank you for your passion. To our coaches, arbiters, volunteers, and parents, thank you for your sacrifice. To our sponsors, partners, and institutions supporting chess, thank you for believing in our vision,” she stated.
Ashley reaffirmed the Executive Council’s determination to make chess accessible to more Ghanaians, particularly children, while nurturing elite talent capable of competing on the international stage.

“The Executive Council remains fully committed to growing chess across Ghana. Our goal is clear: to make chess accessible to every child, to develop world-class players, and to position Ghana as a respected force in the global chess community,” she concluded.
International Chess Day, celebrated annually on July 20, recognizes the power of chess to promote education, inclusion, critical thinking, and friendship among people worldwide. The day also serves as an opportunity for national federations, clubs, and players to celebrate the enduring impact of the game while inspiring the next generation of chess enthusiasts.
