Rugby Rising Play Ghana: Ghana Rugby and Volta Region Rugby Association engages over 150 Girls in Volta Region
The Ghana Rugby Football Union, in collaboration with the Volta Region Rugby Association, organized a successful Rugby Rising Play Girls Outreach at Ola Senior High School in Ho on December 1, 2025. The event engaged over 150 girls through sports and health education, introducing them to the basics of rugby in a safe and supportive environment.
The program, designed for teenage girls with no prior rugby experience, blends basic skills training with the sport’s enduring values: teamwork, discipline, and integrity. Through this initiative, participants can build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and gain foundational techniques needed to progress to Tier 1 rugby.
Registered Dietitian Anna Akyaa Siaw and Nursing Officer Diana Anku Amenuve delivered impactful sessions on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, general wellness, nutrition, and confidence-building.
The VRRA Chairperson, Ms. Anita Atieku, introduced the basics of rugby, its values, and opportunities for girls in the sport. A brief demonstration reinforced teamwork, discipline, and empowerment through rugby. The students actively participated in discussions and demonstrations, showing great enthusiasm and interest in the sport. The impact of the event was significant, with over 150 girls gaining essential knowledge on menstrual hygiene and wellness.
The program also strengthened interest in rugby and sports participation, enhanced collaboration between GRFU, VRRA, the school, and health institutions, and renewed confidence among girls to embrace sports as a tool for growth. The GRFU and VRRA appreciate the contributions of all speakers, school authorities, volunteers, and partners, and remain committed to expanding Rugby Rising Play initiatives across the Volta Region. This program is part of a broader initiative to promote girls’ participation in sports and empower them through rugby .
