“Today marks a historic step forward, not just for Ghana Rugby, but for women and girls across the country and West Africa who deserve equal access to opportunities in sport,” Ms. Inusah said.

T1 Rugby: A Safe Gateway for Girls

At the center of this initiative is T1 Rugby, a non-contact version of the sport designed as an accessible entry point for young girls. Ms. Inusah explained that this format eases cultural concerns and safety fears while allowing participants to embrace rugby’s spirit of teamwork, empowerment, and joy.

“Through T1 Rugby, we are breaking down barriers of fear, safety concerns, and cultural hesitation, while opening doors for girls to experience the values, fun, and empowerment that rugby provides,” she noted.

The project goes beyond just playing the game. Teachers, coaches, and volunteers will receive training not only in rugby but also in safeguarding principles to ensure girls thrive in safe, respectful, and supportive environments. “Safeguarding is not an option — it is the foundation upon which girls can thrive,” Ms. Inusah emphasized.

She also revealed that the program will chart a clear path for development, guiding girls from curious beginners to strong leaders. “Along the way, they will gain more than just skills on the field; they will gain voice, leadership, and opportunities that will serve them for life,” she added.

A Vision That Extends Beyond the Pitch

The long-term ambition of the Rugby Rising Play Project is to build a generation of female athletes who can also take on roles as coaches, referees, administrators, and decision-makers.

With backing from World Rugby, Rugby Africa, and key national stakeholders, the project will unfold in phases, including teacher and volunteer training, safeguarding workshops, community sessions, regional festivals, and a national celebration of girls in rugby.
