Cristiano Ronaldo joins Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan as only players to score in nine consecutive international tournament

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled iconic Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan’s record of scoring in nine successive major international tournaments.

The Portuguese star netted a superb brace in his country’s 3-0 win over Hungary on Tuesday in the EURO 2020 Group F opener in Budapest.

Prior to this, Ronaldo had scored at the 2004 UEFA European Championship, 2006 FIFA World Cup, 2008 Euro, 2010 World Cup in South Africa, 2012 Euro, 2014 FIFA World Cup, 2016 Euro, 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2018 World Cup.

The Ghana star, meanwhile, netted at the World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014, plus at the African Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Gyan was the first player to have scored at nine major international tournaments for his country before Ronaldo equalled.

Like Ronaldo, Gyan is also currently Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in an international career that has last over a decade and a half.

Ronaldo, 36, who made his first appearance in 2004, has scored 106 goals in 177 appearances for Portugal, three fewer than Iranian Ali Daei’s all-time men’s record of 109 international goals.
