Ghana Rugby Introduces Girls at South Labone Technical Institute to the Sport Through Rugby Rising Play
ACCRA, Ghana — The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has introduced 42 participants at South Labone Girls Technical Institute to rugby as part of efforts to promote the sport among young girls and inspire the next generation of female players.
The introductory session took place on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the school’s premises in Accra under the Rugby Rising Play initiative.
The training was led by Ghana Rugby Football Union President Madam Rafatu Inusah, who also served as coach, with support from Eagles players Jamila Awal, Matilda, Matiti and Asana.

The participants were introduced to the fundamentals of rugby, including ball handling, passing, catching and scoring, as they gained practical experience in the sport.
The session provided an opportunity for the girls to develop their understanding of rugby in an engaging environment, with guidance from experienced figures in Ghana’s rugby community.
The involvement of Inusah and the Eagles players also offered the participants direct exposure to women involved in the sport, potentially inspiring them to explore rugby further and consider opportunities for future participation.
The initiative reflects the importance of introducing rugby to young people at the grassroots level, particularly girls, to broaden participation and strengthen the foundation for women’s rugby in Ghana.

With the enthusiasm displayed during the session, the GRFU expressed optimism about the future of the sport, describing the atmosphere as one filled with energy and promise.
As Ghana continues to develop its rugby talent, initiatives such as Rugby Rising Play can help introduce more young people to the game, encourage female participation and create opportunities for the next generation to discover their potential.

The session at South Labone Girls Technical Institute marks another step towards bringing rugby closer to young girls and building a stronger future for the sport in Ghana.
