In a remarkable transition from sports administration to traditional leadership, Ben Nunoo Mensah has carved yet another chapter in his life of service—this time as a chief within the Ga State.

The former President of the Ghana Olympic Committee was enstooled as the Nɔyaa Mantsɛ (Development Chief) of the Ga traditional area, receiving the stool name Nii Kojo Ashiefie Papanyira I. This honour, conferred at the Ga Mantse Stool House in Accra, reflects his immense contribution to sports development and national progress.

A Chief Recognised for Service

The enstoolment, led by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, was not merely ceremonial—it was symbolic of a life dedicated to uplifting others through sport and leadership.

The Ga Mantse praised Nunoo Mensah for his commitment to youth development and the growth of Ghanaian sports, describing him as a figure whose work has impacted both athletes and communities nationwide.

As Development Chief, his responsibilities now extend beyond sports into:

  • Supporting community development projects
  • Promoting education through scholarships
  • Contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the Ga State

Nunoo Mensah himself described the honour as both a privilege and a responsibility, pledging to continue serving Ghana with dedication and humility.

A Transformational Era in Ghana Sports

Before ascending to traditional leadership, Nunoo Mensah spent eight impactful years at the helm of the Ghana Olympic Committee.

His tenure was defined by:

  • Revitalisation of lesser-funded sports disciplines
  • Improved support systems for athletes and federations
  • Infrastructure development, including the OlympiAfrica project at Amasaman
  • Ghana’s return to the Olympic medal podium after three decades at the Tokyo 2020 Games

He also expanded opportunities for sports administrators and media practitioners, ensuring Ghana had stronger representation on the global sporting stage.

In 2025, he formally handed over leadership to Richard Akpokavie, leaving behind what many describe as a reform-driven and forward-looking legacy.

Beyond Sports: A Life of Service Continues

Nunoo Mensah’s journey did not end with sports. His appointment to the board of the Tema Oil Refinery highlights his versatility as a leader trusted in both sports and national development sectors.

Now as Nɔyaa Mantsɛ, he bridges two worlds:

  • The discipline and excellence of sport
  • The cultural responsibility of traditional leadership
