On Sunday, 8th February, the Empower Her – Kayayei Programme turned vision into reality as women from the Kayayei community stepped onto a rugby field for their very first training session — a powerful moment filled with confidence, courage, and fresh beginnings.
What began weeks ago at Agbogbloshie Market through conversations, curiosity, and connection has now grown into structured participation, learning, and belief.
For many of the women present, this was their first direct encounter with rugby, and the excitement was unmistakable.
Led by Coach Ms. Rafatu Inusah, assisted by Anita Tieku and supported by Samira Mensah, the session focused on the fundamentals of the game in a safe and inclusive environment.

The training introduced participants to basic ball handling, passing, and catching techniques, scoring fundamentals, and team communication.
But the impact reached far beyond technical skills. The session became a space for presence — standing tall, trusting teammates, laughing freely, and discovering strength in both body and mind.
Every completed pass and each try scored symbolised more than progress in the game; they represented confidence gained and personal barriers broken.

The energy on the field was infectious. Smiles replaced hesitation, and encouragement rang out across the training ground. What unfolded was not simply a rugby lesson but the formation of a community bonded through sport.
This session marks the official start of a pathway that extends well beyond playing. Through Empower Her, the women are being introduced to opportunities within rugby not only as players, but also as future coaches, match officials, volunteers, and leaders — clear proof that sport can open doors where society often closes them.

The Empower Her – Kayayei Programme exists to remind women who carry heavy loads daily that they are seen, valued, and capable. Rugby is the vehicle, but dignity, inclusion, and opportunity remain the true destination.
This was only the first session.
It is only the beginning.
And the journey ahead is powerful.
