DR Congo Make World Cup History with First-Ever Point Against Portugal

The Democratic Republic of Congo etched their name into FIFA World Cup history on Wednesday after securing their first-ever point at the global showpiece with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Portugal in their Group K opener in Houston.

Making their first World Cup appearance in 52 years, the Leopards produced a spirited display to frustrate one of the tournament favourites and earn a result that will be remembered for generations.

Portugal struck first after just six minutes when midfielder João Neves headed home from a cross by Pedro Neto, giving Roberto Martinez’s side the perfect start.

However, DR Congo refused to be intimidated. Their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa rose highest to head in a delivery from Arthur Masuaku, scoring DR Congo’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal and levelling the match at 1-1.

Despite dominating possession throughout the contest, Portugal struggled to break down a disciplined Congolese defence. The Europeans controlled around 80 percent of the ball during large spells of the game and completed more than 450 passes in the first half alone, but created few clear-cut opportunities.

The Leopards nearly completed a famous comeback after the break when veteran striker Cédric Bakambu struck the post, narrowly missing the chance to hand his nation a historic victory.

For Portugal, the result was a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign despite fielding a star-studded lineup led by Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old, appearing at a record sixth FIFA World Cup, was largely kept quiet by the Congolese defence and failed to find the net.
