John Painstil, a star of Ghana’s 2010 World Cup team, has advised the Black Stars to eschew the idea of revenge against Uruguay ahead of Qatar 2022.

The West African giants have been drawn into Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and ‘sworn enemies’ Uruguay.

Paintsil, who played in that painful quarter-final defeat to Uruguay in 2010, describe Ghana’s 2022 World Cup group as the ‘Group of Death’.

“The game that is going to be mouth-watering and that people will be looking forward to is Uruguay-Ghana, because of the incident that happened in 2010 in South Africa,” Paintsil told BBC Sport Africa.

“As football people, we don’t think about revenge – but we always thought about how we can go forward.

“At the end of the day, it is not only Uruguay that we will play in the group. If you beat Uruguay but don’t beat the rest, it will be a problem.”

Ghanaians have been waiting for an opportunity to revenge the defeat to Uruguay after a late Luis Suarez handball prevented the Black Stars from reaching the semi-finals.

“I would call it a group of death,” he continued. “Seeing Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea… all strong sides. We are going to take one [game] at a time and take it as it comes.”

The Black Stars will start their World Cup campaign against 2016 European champions Portugal before facing South Korea and having Uruguay to tackle in their final group game.
