The inaugural Atsu Cup is set to kick off on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, in honour of the late Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu.
The commemorative youth football tournament will run until 30 August at Yartel Okoso Park in Senya Beraku in Ghana’s Central Region, a venue closely connected to Atsu’s early football development.
The competition will feature Under-13 and Under-15 teams as organisers seek to celebrate the lasting legacy of the former Ghana international and inspire a new generation of young footballers.
Atsu began his early career development with Cheetah FC in Senya Beraku, where his talent was nurtured before he went on to establish himself as an accomplished professional footballer in Europe and a key member of the Ghana national team.
The tournament is therefore being staged at a significant location in his football journey, providing young players with an opportunity to compete while remembering one of Ghana’s most admired footballers.
Atsu died in February 2023 at the age of 31 after being trapped under rubble following the devastating earthquake in Turkey. He was still an active professional footballer at the time, playing for Hatayspor.
His death sent shockwaves through Ghana and the international football community, with tributes pouring in from former clubs, teammates, supporters and football organisations around the world.
Three years after his passing, his connection with youth football in Senya Beraku continues through the Atsu Cup, with organisers hoping the tournament will preserve his memory and encourage young players to pursue their dreams.
The six-day competition will run from 25 to 30 August 2026 at Yartel Okoso Park, featuring Under-13 and Under-15 teams.
The Atsu Cup is expected to combine youth football development with a celebration of the life and legacy of a player whose journey from Senya Beraku took him to the highest levels of the game.
