The Northern Region Rugby Association (NRRA) has taken a significant step in promoting the well-being and empowerment of young girls through sports and education.
On November 21, 2025, the NRRA, in collaboration with the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), successfully organized a Rugby Rising outreach program at Ridge Junior High School A and B in Tamale.
The program, which aligns with World Rugby and Rugby Africa’s shared commitment to promoting the well-being and empowerment of young girls, aimed to introduce rugby to schools while promoting health, discipline, teamwork, and the overall development of young learners, particularly girls.

The event featured a health education session for girls, led by Madam Zakaria Asmawu, a health professional from Tamale Central Hospital, who educated the girls on personal hygiene during adolescence, menstrual health, and proper use of sanitary materials, as well as common myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.
The session created a safe and open environment for the girls to ask questions and gain essential knowledge that supports their health and encourages sports participation.

Following the health education session, Coach Hudu Musah and his team introduced the students to the basics of rugby, including ball-handling skills, safety measures, teamwork activities, and simple drills. The students participated with high enthusiasm and showed growing interest in the sport.
The Rugby Rising program had a significant impact on the students, increasing awareness and interest in rugby among them. The program also improved the girls’ understanding of personal hygiene and menstrual health, and strengthened the partnership between NRRA, the school, GRFU, and health professionals. The NRRA expressed sincere appreciation to GRFU, the school authorities, Coach Hudu Musah and his assistants, volunteers, and Madam Zakaria Asmawu for their invaluable contribution to the program.

The NRRA looks forward to delivering more impactful developmental programs across schools in the Northern Region, empowering young girls and promoting the development of rugby in the area.
The success of the Rugby Rising program is a testament to the power of sports and education in shaping the lives of young people, and the NRRA is committed to continuing its efforts in promoting the well-being and empowerment of young girls through rugby.
