Ghana’s football ecosystem witnessed a major breakthrough as the Ghana Football Association (GFA), in partnership with Ghana’s foremost life assurance company, Enterprise Life, launched a comprehensive insurance policy for referees on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.
The initiative represents one of the most significant welfare reforms in domestic football, combining the GFA’s renewed commitment to officiating standards with Enterprise Life’s pedigree in insurance excellence.
The launch, which fulfils a pledge made by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku during the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress in Prampram, marks a historic shift toward improved protection for match officials across the Premier League, Division One League, and Women’s Premier League.
Describing the milestone as “a significant moment in the journey of our football,” the GFA President highlighted the critical role referees play in sustaining fairness in the game.

He reflected on the promise made months earlier, stating:
“On that day, I assured you that the Football Association under my humble leadership would take bold and deliberate steps to elevate referee welfare, strengthen officiating standards and provide the necessary protection and motivation for the men and women who uphold the integrity of the game.”
With the launch now fully realised, he added that the policy represents “a comprehensive welfare intervention designed to support, protect and empower our referees across all domestic competitions.”

Referees welcome insurance policy
Meanwhile, Ghana’s top referee, Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, set to officiate at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative.

He described the policy as “too good to be true” and acknowledged that referees have often struggled with welfare challenges.
Laryea also thanked GFA President Kurt Okraku and Enterprise Life for introducing a scheme that finally recognises the demands placed on officials.
He concluded by praying the policy “would outlast Kurt’s administration” and encouraged all referees to honour the confidence placed in them.
Laryea urged his colleagues to “give off their best” in light of the new support structure.
