In a show of solidarity and support, former Ghana Olympics Committee (GOC) President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has pledged his backing to the Ghana Weightlifting Federation ahead of the 2025 African Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship.
The championship, which Ghana is set to host, promises to be a pivotal moment for the country’s weightlifting team.
During a visit to the Ghana Weightlifting Center at the Accra Sports Stadium, Ben Nunoo Mensah commended the federation’s efforts in promoting the sport.
“I haven’t been here for a while, since the inauguration of this gym, and I can see that you are really putting the gym to good use,” he said.
“I want to thank the President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, Hon. Jerry Ahmed, and his current executives for their wonderful job. At least, they’re ensuring that weightlifting remains one of Ghana’s sports.”

The former GOC President emphasized the importance of qualifying for the Olympic Games, saying,
“Weightlifting has always been represented at the last three Olympics, and I pray that we qualify for the Olympic Games. The responsibility falls on all of you, especially the experienced ones.”
He urged the team’s veterans, including Jeremiah and Winifred, to motivate the younger athletes and help them achieve their goals.
Ben Nunoo Mensah also highlighted the significance of performing well in African competitions to secure slots for the Olympics.
“To be at the Olympics, you need to do well in Africa. Africa allocates slots. let’s say five slots for African countries and you’re going to be picked based on your performance in African competitions.”
As Ghana prepares to host the African Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship, Ben Nunoo Mensah expressed his confidence in the team’s abilities.
“From tomorrow or Monday, you’ll be hosting the rest of Africa here. This is a host-and-win situation. You don’t host and then allow foreigners to come and take all the medals away.”
The Ghana Weightlifting Federation is optimistic about the team’s chances, and with the support of former GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah, they are poised to make a strong impression on the African stage.
