Ghana Names 23-Man Squad for Mexico Friendly, Ashimeru and Afena-Gyan Return

Twenty-three (23) players have been called up for this month’s international friendly against Mexico. The squad is composed of star players from the domestic league and European leagues who are closely monitored by Coach Carlos Queiroz, as well as U-23 players who will soon represent Ghana in the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz has kept a close eye on the selected players, with the squad also featuring a number of U-23 prospects expected to play key roles in Ghana’s upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.

Among the headline inclusions is Majeed Ashimeru, who returns to the national team after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a muscle injury that restricted his appearances at both club and international level. Also back in the fold is Felix Afena-Gyan, making his first call-up since featuring against Trinidad and Tobago in the Unity Cup in London in May last year.

From the domestic scene, Medeama SC midfielder Salim Adams leads a strong group of home-based players. He is joined by Ebenezer Abban of Heart of Lions, Ebenezer Adade of Dreams FC, and Nations FC captain Razak Simpson.

The inclusion of both seasoned players and promising youngsters underscores Ghana’s intent to build a competitive squad capable of delivering immediate results while preparing for future tournaments.

Ghana is set to travel to Mexico for the friendly scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026, in what is expected to be a crucial test for the Black Stars as they fine-tune preparations for upcoming international assignments.
