Former Germany international Gerald Asamoah has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to rethink its approach to scouting dual-nationality players, stressing the importance of identifying and engaging talents abroad at a much younger age.
The ex-Schalke forward believes Ghana risks losing top prospects to European nations if it delays its recruitment efforts, urging authorities to act early and build stronger connections with players of Ghanaian descent in the diaspora. His comments come amid growing debate over player selection and the Black Stars’ long-term strategy ahead of major competitions.
Asamoah emphasised that early engagement would not only secure commitment from these players but also help integrate them into Ghana’s football philosophy from the grassroots level.
He noted that many countries have successfully built competitive national teams by nurturing relationships with young diaspora talents, a model he believes Ghana must adopt to remain competitive on the global stage.
The discussion around diaspora recruitment has intensified as Ghana continues to monitor several foreign-born players who are eligible to represent the Black Stars, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in focus.
Asamoah, who has Ghanaian roots but represented Germany at international level, insists that a proactive and structured approach could be key to strengthening the national team’s future.
