Frederick Lartey Otu: The Ghanaian Sports Administrator Driving Taekwondo’s Rise Across Africa

Leadership in sport is measured not only by medals won but also by the strength of the institutions that nurture athletes and sustain excellence. Few Ghanaian sports administrators embody this principle more than Frederick Lartey Otu, whose distinguished career has positioned him among the continent’s leading advocates for the growth and transformation of taekwondo.

As President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation and 2nd Vice President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, he has consistently championed athlete development, governance reforms, and international collaboration, helping to elevate Ghana’s profile within the global sporting community.

A defining milestone in his leadership journey is his re-appointment as Chairman of the Development Committee of the Africa Taekwondo Union (AFTU) for the 2026-2028 term. The renewed mandate reflects the confidence of the continental governing body in his vision, experience, and commitment to advancing taekwondo across Africa.

Having first assumed the role in 2021, Mr. Otu has contributed significantly to initiatives that promote grassroots participation, strengthen technical capacity, develop coaches and officials, and create broader opportunities for athletes across member nations. His continued stewardship places Ghana at the forefront of shaping the strategic direction of taekwondo on the continent.

At home, Frederick Lartey Otu has been instrumental in transforming Ghana Taekwondo into one of the country’s most progressive national sports federations.

Under his leadership, the federation has expanded athlete development pathways, strengthened governance structures, enhanced international partnerships, and increased Ghana’s participation and competitiveness in regional and global competitions. His administration has placed equal emphasis on high-performance sport and grassroots development, ensuring that young talents are identified, nurtured, and equipped to compete at the highest levels.

His remarkable contributions have earned widespread recognition within the sporting fraternity. In recognition of his exceptional leadership, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) honoured him with the 2015 Association Chairman/President of the Year Award, celebrating his outstanding role in advancing taekwondo in Ghana. Over the years, he has continued to receive commendation from national and international sporting institutions for his unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and the sustainable development of sport.
