Athletics and Boxing have always been our surest bet – GOC President

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Ben Nunoo Mensah believes Athletics and boxing are the only two disciplines capable of producing medals for Ghana at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Joseph Commey has won Ghana’s first medal after beating Allan Oiake of Papua New Guinea to progress to the semi final of the featherweight division where he is guaranteed a bronze medal.

Ghana has secured itself the the first medal after competing in over 10 events at the ongoing commonwealth games in Birmingham.

“Every country has its strong discipline, it’s not that you will perform well in all the disciplines and for Ghana, it’s has always been boxing and athletics. And coming here even though I knew anything can happen in sport, the other disciplines could pull up, my strong bet was on athletics, boxing and weightlifting. Traditionally we are strong in these disciplines.”.

Boxers Wahid Omar and Abraham Nkansah will be hoping to increase Ghana’s medal haul when they face their opponents in the quarterfinal stage of their respective divisions while Sprinters Benjamin Azamati qualifed to the Men’s 100m finals.
