The Association of Sports for Disabled (ASFOD) Engages Stakeholders At The Accra Sports Stadium

Over 25 para disciplines under the umbrella of the Association of Sports for the Disabled- ASFOD converged at the media center of the Accra Sports stadium for its end of year stakeholders meeting.

The meeting sought to deliberate on the way forward for the various Associations next year as the covid situation had deeply stalled planned programmes for the Associations.

The program attracted 27 disciplines who appended their signatories to the Memorandum of understanding between ASFOD and them. The former, seeking to establish a clearer picture of working relationship between both parties.

Top on the agenda was the Memorandum of understanding between ASFOD and its stakeholders in terms of development, enforcing the right structures within the disciplines,Africa Games Blue Print for 2023, Technical Training courses for all members, and a brief discussion on how to support Associations with their affiliation fees .

An addendum of ASFOD’s farming project , Disability Satellite, and qualification Gifts were also dissected by the house.

ASFOD was constituted in 1995 under the recommendation of Group Captain Francis Darko Kumi CEO of then National Sports Council as a sports wing of all practising disability sports in Ghana.

ASFOD adviced all the Disability Sports stakeholders that are not been governed by the regular sports (able – IOC sports) to have collaboration in a way of play and technical skills to be able to develop all sports praticed by persons with Disability in Ghana.

Disciplines who appended their signatures in the MOU included; Ghana Cycling Federation, Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Ghana Tennis Federation, Ghana Volleyball Association, Cerebral Palsy swimming Association, Cerebral Palsy Football, Cerebral Palsy Frame Football Association, Cerebral Palsy Bowling Association, Skate Soccer Ghana, Ghana Para Table Tennis Federation, Para Boxing Association, Deaf Bowling Association, Deaf Golf Association, Blind Soccer Association, Wheelchair Basketball Federation, amongst others.

Some of the notable Federation Heads who graced the program included; Mr. Frederick Otu President of Taekwondo Federation, Mr. Albert Frimpong, President of Skate Soccer Ghana and CEO of IFSS, Mr. Paul Atchoe, President of Volleyball Association, Mr. Shaaban Mohammed, President ASFOD, Technical Director, Ghana Cycling Federation, Mr. Isaac Duah Agyemang, President Ghana Tennis Federation, Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu, President, Ghana Table Tennis Federation, Mr. Adjetey Sowah, Founding member of ASFOD in 1995, Madam Anne Doe, Founding member, ASFOD.

The constituted objective by the National Sports Council of ASFOD is to serve as the Sportswing of all Disability Sports in Ghana under the National Sports Authority and is primarily geared towards the development of the various Associations, Organisations and athletes with Disability under its fold. ASFOD is limited to its core objectives of assisting the all Disability sporting outfits in Ghana.

ASFOD advices all the Disability Sports’ stakeholders that is not governed by the regular sports (Able – IOC Sports) to have collaboration in a way of play and Technical skills to be able to develop all sports practiced by Persons with Disability in Ghana.

ASFOD wishes to thank all those assisted in diverse ways in its success this year 2020.
Mention could be made of Mr. Festus Tettey, CEO of Promasidor Ghana Ltd, who donated cowbell products to the Disability athletes and officials during Covid19 period, Mayor of Accra Hnr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, who also donated half of his salary to support persons with Disability through Sports, the CEO of Vodafone- Madam Patricia Obo-Nai and the lead of Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Mr. Amaris Nana Perbi with the wonderful Disability Games organised at the Accra Sports stadium on her birthday and also donated five thousand Ghana Cedis for the ASFOD farm project, Dr. Isaac Virtues Ankomah-President of the Ghana Para Athletics Association who is the CEO of Crystal Galaxy College , giving out 22 acres of land at Akrama in the Central Region for ASFOD’s farming project to feed Persons with Disability through Sports.
