13th African Games: LOC Unveils Official Logo, Mascot and Website For Accra, 2023

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 13th African Games – Accra 2023 – on Thursday December 16, unveiled the official logo, mascot and website for the games set to be staged in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

The launch was held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center in a colourful event which featured the high and mighty in the sports ecosystem coupled with top government officials.

The much-talked-about and anticipated logo has been named Akweley [which is the name given to the female twin among the Ga tribe], while the mascot is christened Okodie [which means Eagle in the Akan dialect] and the official website for the games was named as ‘Tawiah’ which is the name given to the first child after twins among the Ga-Adangme ethnic group predominantly found in the nation’s capital.

 

 

According to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the wisdom behind the mascot is that, the eagle symbolizes courage, strength, focus and immortality.

In his estimation, eagles fly higher than any other bird. The height of success that those with eagle mentality can achieve is amazing.

Generally, those with eagle mentality are strong, brave, creative, insightful and visionary.

“We have taken the posture of the eagle and success is our only option,” he explained.

It is against this backdrop that the Ministry in collaboration with the LOC settled on ƆKODIƐ – the Eagle.

“Mr. President, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Logo is the symbol of Africa Unity through Sports,”

“It depicts a sportsperson taking off from Ghana, cruising to victory and carrying the whole of Africa along,”

The Website of the LOC is the place to visit for all the information and education on the 13th African Games, Accra 2023.

LOC Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu added that,

 

 

“The Logo and Mascot are the brand and identity of the African Games and by stretch the LOC and African Union. They are therefore the marketing tools for organizing and hosting the Games”.

The 13th edition of the African Games will be staged at two venues; the Legon Sports Stadium and the Borteyman Sports Complex in August 2023

The Games will also serve as qualifiers for the variousdisciplines for the Olympics Games in Paris, 2024.
