Zimbabwe’s Cheetahs crowned Africa Men’s Sevens champions in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda — Zimbabwe’s Cheetahs have been crowned champions of the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Series after defeating hosts Uganda 26–19 in a thrilling final in Kampala.

The victory secured Zimbabwe the tournament title and a place in the HSBC SVNS 3 competition, marking a significant step forward for the country’s rugby sevens programme.

Coached by Fortunate Chipendu, the Cheetahs produced a composed campaign throughout the tournament, combining attacking intent with defensive discipline as they negotiated their way to the final.

Zimbabwe began their campaign with a commanding 40–17 victory over Ghana, before overcoming Morocco 19–12 in the pool stage.

The biggest challenge came in the final against a determined Ugandan side playing in front of a home crowd. Zimbabwe held their nerve to prevail 26–19, sparking celebrations among the Cheetahs and their supporters.

The triumph gives Zimbabwe more than continental silverware. Their success in Uganda also earns them qualification for HSBC SVNS 3, providing an opportunity to compete on a broader international stage.

For Uganda, the final represented a missed opportunity to claim the title on home soil, but their run to the final underlined their competitiveness among Africa’s leading rugby sevens nations.

Zimbabwe’s victory caps a memorable tournament for the Cheetahs, who can now turn their attention to the next challenge: carrying their continental success onto the global stage.
