USA Become Second Team to Reach World Cup Round of 32 After Mexico

The United States have become the second nation to secure a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following fellow co-hosts Mexico, after a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in Group D.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side took control early in Seattle when Australian defender Cameron Burgess turned the ball into his own net in the 11th minute. The Americans doubled their advantage before halftime through 21-year-old Alex Freeman, who headed home his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal after a VAR review confirmed he was onside.

Australia attempted to mount a comeback in the second half and enjoyed more possession, but they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against a disciplined American defence. The United States comfortably held on for their second consecutive victory of the tournament.
