At the Cape Coast Open Championship 2026, Ghana’s top quarter-mile hurdler Seidu Mammoudu Baba delivered a commanding performance to win the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.45 seconds, setting a new Season’s Best and Personal Best.
Competing in Heat 2 of the final, the Ghana Armed Forces athlete displayed excellent rhythm between the barriers and strong speed endurance to dip under the 50-second barrier for the first time in his career. His 49.45 performance stood out as the fastest time across both heats and underlined his growing form early in the 2026 season.
Finishing second in the same heat was Osborn Turkson of Cheetahs Track and Field Club, who clocked 50.41 seconds, while Banabas Dompey of the Ghana Armed Forces placed third with 50.70 seconds, completing a competitive podium in Heat 2.
Other athletes in the heat included Peter Antiedu (Sagnation Track & Field) in 53.97, Alhassan Suleman (Ghana National Fire Service) in 56.54, and Paul Debrah Owusu (KNUST) in 57.84.
In Heat 1, Clinton Owusu of Cheetahs Track and Field Club led the field with 53.15 seconds, ahead of Evans Ofosu (UEW) in 55.82 and Emmanuel Brefo (UEW) in 59.06. Kofi Elkana (Ghana Immigration Service) and Anthony Mensah (Central Region) followed in 1:01.12 and 1:01.46 respectively, while Maxwell Anane-Asamoah (KNUST) recorded a DNF.
Mammoudu’s 49.45 performance not only secured victory but also represents one of the fastest early-season 400m hurdles times recorded in Ghana in recent years, positioning him strongly as the 2026 domestic season progresses.
His run signals excellent preparation and sets a high benchmark as Ghana’s quarter-mile hurdlers build toward the national championships and international competitions later in the season.
