Spain booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Belgium in their quarter-final clash on Friday.
Belgium fought back after falling behind to Fabián Ruiz’s first-half opener, with Charles De Ketelaere equalising to set up a tense finish. However, Spain found the breakthrough in the closing stages when Merino, introduced from the bench, reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area to fire home the decisive goal.
The late strike sparked wild celebrations among the Spanish players and fans as La Roja sealed a hard-fought victory to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
Spain will now face France in the semi-finals in what promises to be one of the biggest matches of the tournament, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
