“Massive Relegation” to hit Division One League as Ghana Football welcomes new league structure

Thirty(30) teams in Ghana’s second tier league, the Division One League, will relegated at the end of the 2021-22 season to make way for the newly created National Super League.

Starting from the 2022-23 football seaosn, an 18-club National Super League will replace the Division One League as Ghana’s second tier club football competition.

The new Ghana Football League structure was introduced and accepted by members of congress of the GFA at their 27th ordinary session at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence on Thursday.

Per the new format, only the five clubs from each of the three Zones of the Division One League will maintain their status as second tier teams at the end of this season.

The new structure is to ensure the second tier conpetetion becomes national in nature instead of the current zonal arrangement.

At the end of the this season, winners of the respective zones in the Division One League will be promoted to the Ghana Premier League which will be ran by an autonomous body for the first time.

Second to sixth placed teams in the zones, together with the three(3) relegated teams from the 2021-22 Ghana Premier League will for the new second tier league, The National Super League.

The remaining ten(10) teams in each of the three zones will be relegated to their respective regions to play in the Regional Super League, another newly created competition to serve as the new third tier.

Those clubs will be joined by the clubs that qualify to the middle league of the Regional Division two leagues. The Regional Super League will also be ran by the GFA.

That will be followed by the Regional second division leagues which will remain under the watch of the Regional Football Associations(RFAs).
