The inaugural edition of the Atsu Cup is set to take place from August 25 to 30, 2026, at the Yartel Okoso Park in Senya Beraku, with some of Ghana’s brightest young football talents expected to participate.
The youth tournament, which will feature Under-13 and Under-15 teams, has been introduced by Abdul-Hayye Yartey, President and Founder of Cheetah Football Club, in honour of the late Christian Atsu, one of Ghana’s most celebrated footballers and a proud product of Cheetah FC.
The competition aims to preserve Atsu’s legacy by providing a platform for young footballers to showcase their talent while embracing the values of hard work, humility, discipline, and dedication that defined the late winger’s career.
Christian Atsu rose through the ranks at Cheetah FC before enjoying a successful professional career in Europe with clubs including Porto, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Everton, Bournemouth, Málaga, and Al-Raed. He also earned over 60 caps for the Black Stars and played a key role in Ghana’s journey to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final. Atsu tragically lost his life during the devastating earthquake in Turkey in February 2023.
Speaking about the initiative, Abdul-Hayye Yartey emphasized that the Atsu Cup is more than just a football tournament, describing it as a celebration of the life and legacy of a player who inspired countless young footballers across Ghana and beyond.
The six-day competition is expected to attract football lovers, scouts, coaches, and community members, creating an exciting atmosphere as the next generation of stars battle for honours.
With youth development remaining a core objective of Cheetah FC, the maiden Atsu Cup promises to become an annual event that will continue to honour Christian Atsu’s memory while nurturing future football talents.
