Luis Diaz Marks World Cup Debut with Goal in Colombia’s 3-1 Victory
Colombia opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, thanks to a standout performance from Luis Díaz, who scored once and provided an assist in Group K.
After a tightly contested first half at Estadio Azteca, Daniel Muñoz broke the deadlock in the 40th minute from a Díaz assist to hand Colombia a deserved lead. Uzbekistan, making their FIFA World Cup debut, responded after the break through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who scored his country’s first-ever World Cup goal in the 60th minute.
Colombia quickly regained control as Díaz restored the lead five minutes later, with his effort slipping past goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov. Uzbekistan pushed for another equaliser, but substitute Jaminton Campaz sealed the victory deep into stoppage time to make it 3-1.
The result sends Colombia to the top of Group K after Portugal and DR Congo played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. Colombia finished with more chances and showed their quality in key moments, while Uzbekistan earned praise for a spirited performance in their historic World Cup debut.
