Jerry Ahmed Shaib Esq Responds to claims made by the MP for Kete South, Eric Edem Agbana
Jerry Ahmed Shaib Esq according to Ghana Talk News responds to claims made by the MP for Ketu South, Eric Edem Agbana on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Dear Eric,
I have learned to engage in discourse professionally without resorting to insults. What has my independent view as a lawmaker got to do with my leadership position in Parliament?
You are new to Parliament, as am I.
I encourage you to remain open to learning, as lawmaking is not driven by morality and or propaganda, but by facts and constitutional provisions.
A bill awaiting presidential assent in my respectful view does NOT expire with the dissolution of Parliament. Could you point to any law or constitutional provision that is contrary to my position, please?
The Constitution unequivocally supports the notion that governance is a continuum, as evidenced by treaties, decisions, and transactions that remain valid regardless of a change in government. Specifically, Article 113(1) of the 1992 Constitution provides no basis for your assertion, nor do Orders 174 to 175(1)-(4) of the Standing Orders of Parliament mention the expiration of a bill awaiting presidential assent.
Allow me to clarify further. the extensive consultations mandated by Article 106 of the Constitution were completed, and the bill was duly passed. At that point, Parliament’s role in the process was finished. Your assertion that the bill “expired” is therefore inaccurate.
President Mahama himself assured the Ghanaian people, the clergy, and other stakeholders of his commitment to signing this bill. So, why the delay now that he is in office?
If President Akufo-Addo failed to assent to the bill, does that justify President Mahama doing the same, despite his promises?
Leadership demands integrity and consistency, not convenient rhetoric for electoral gain.
The Ghanaian people deserve leaders who honor their commitments and uphold their values not those who shift positions when it suits their agenda. In my view, the bill has not expired; it simply requires action.
I trust that as you grow in your role, you will prioritize facts over misconceptions.
