Is Kwasi Appiah Heading Back for a Third Spell

As uncertainty continues to surround the future of Ghana’s senior national team, one familiar name has resurfaced in football discussions across the country Kwasi Appiah.

The former Black Stars head coach, who has already led the team on two separate occasions, is once again being linked with a possible return. But is Ghana ready to turn to Appiah for a third time?

Kwasi Appiah remains one of the most recognizable figures in Ghanaian football history. His first stint as head coach between 2012 and 2014 saw him achieve a historic feat, becoming the first indigenous coach to lead the Black Stars to a FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Under his guidance, Ghana also reached the semi-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, showcasing a team filled with resilience and quality.

Across his time with the Black Stars, Appiah’s record paints a picture of both promise and inconsistency. He managed over two dozen matches during his initial spell, recording close to a dozen wins, a handful of draws, and several defeats, giving him a win rate hovering around the mid-40 percent mark. His second stint from 2017 to 2020 brought renewed expectations, but despite guiding Ghana to another AFCON appearance, inconsistency and internal challenges led to his eventual departure.

However, in what many are now calling a remarkable turnaround, Appiah has rebuilt his coaching reputation with Sudan. Since taking charge, he has transformed the team into a disciplined and competitive unit. Sudan’s recent performances have been impressive, including an unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers and a historic qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — notably ahead of Ghana. One of the standout moments of his tenure was Sudan’s shocking victory over the Black Stars, a result that further intensified conversations about his coaching credentials.

Back home, the Black Stars are currently battling inconsistency, with concerns growing over the team’s direction, tactical identity, and long-term vision. Many Ghanaian football analysts believe the team lacks stability and leadership, fueling debates about whether a return to experience could be the solution.

This is where Kwasi Appiah’s name continues to gain traction. His deep understanding of Ghanaian football, ability to manage both local and international players, and his recent success under difficult conditions with Sudan make him an appealing option to some.

Yet, the idea of a third stint also raises important questions. Would returning to a former coach signal a step forward or a move backwards? Can Appiah overcome the challenges that affected his previous tenures? And most importantly, is he the right man to rebuild the confidence of both players and fans?

For now, there has been no official confirmation from the Ghana Football Association regarding any potential appointment. But as discussions intensify and pressure mounts to restore the Black Stars to their former glory, Kwasi Appiah’s resurgence ensures that his name will remain firmly in the spotlight.

Whether or not he makes a dramatic return, one thing is certain — Kwasi Appiah’s story with Ghana football may not be over just yet.
