Powerful rainstorms that recently swept through parts of Accra have caused notable damage to sections of the Accra Sports Stadium, with the facility’s floodlight system among the hardest hit.
The severe weather conditions, recorded in late April and again on Wednesday, April 29, brought heavy rainfall and strong winds that reportedly impacted several structures within the stadium complex.
Preliminary assessments suggest that one of the stadium’s floodlight towers suffered major structural damage, while two other towers are believed to have sustained minor impact.

Officials of the National Sports Authority are currently carrying out detailed inspections to assess the full extent of the destruction and evaluate the structural integrity of the affected areas. The outcome of the assessment is expected to determine whether upcoming sporting and entertainment events at the venue could be affected.
The development has once again intensified calls for the renovation and modernization of Ghana’s aging sports infrastructure, especially as the country seeks to strengthen its reputation as a destination for major international sporting and cultural events.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates after completing their investigations and technical assessments.
