HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Asante Kotoko SC Celebrate 87th Birthday Today!

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club celebrate its 87th birthday today having been established on August 31, 1935.

According to the history books, Mr J.S.K Frimpong, popularly called as Teacher Frimpong, then teacher of the Kumasi government school who had all the time shown interest of “Kumasi Titanics”, a club established in 1926 organized some men from his school and proposed a change name from Kumasi Titanics to “Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC”.

Permission had to be obtained from the Asantehene because the name “Kotoko”, meaning porcupine is the official symbol of the Ashanti nation.

The Asantehene, Nana Osei Agyeman Prempeh 2, became the first life patron of the club.

Asante Kotoko SC was subsequently formally founded.

The club which has won a record 25 Ghana Premier League titles and has twice won the CAF Champions League is 87th today.

The club in 2010 was voted African Club of the 20th Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics [IFFHS].
