The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA), in collaboration with the ICC – International Cricket Council ICC Africa (ICC), is set to host a prestigious Level 1 Umpire Tutors Course at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate from Tuesday, May 27 to Thursday, May 29, 2025.
This high-impact program will feature 13 participants drawn from five West African nations (Ghana, Cameroon, Mali, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia) as part of ICC’s broader agenda to elevate officiating standards across the region.
At the heart of the course are two seasoned ICC Master Educators, Lauren Agenbag (South Africa’s celebrated international umpire) and Thomas Mokorosi, who will lead participants through a rigorous curriculum designed to build their capacity as certified tutors capable of training umpires in their home countries.

“This is a landmark moment for cricket in Ghana and West Africa,” remarked Bruce Okine, Ghana’s Chief Umpire and a certified ICC Tutor.
“Not only does it empower the next generation of umpires, but it positions us to develop our own qualified trainers locally. We’re also proud to have female participants this time, which is a breakthrough for umpiring diversity in Ghana.”
The 9am to 5pm daily sessions will cover core modules in officiating theory, player management, match protocol, laws of the game, and effective training delivery, blending classroom work with practical field simulations.
This ICC initiative is part of a global “train-the-trainer” movement designed to create sustainable coaching and umpiring ecosystems in Associate Member countries.
Just last month, Agenbag and Mokorosi conducted a similar course in Eswatini, bringing together participants from Botswana, Mozambique, and Lesotho.
Ghana has shown strong commitment to this vision, having successfully hosted the Level 1 Coach Tutor Course earlier in February, aimed at enhancing coaching education across the region.
This week’s course stands as yet another bold step toward making Ghana a hub for cricket development in West Africa.
