The Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), Mr. Shaaban Mohammed, has lauded the ongoing EU Velocity Cycling Tour for Sustainability, describing it as a groundbreaking and transformative seven-day cycling expedition spanning from Tamale to Accra.

The tour, which runs from April 12 to April 18, 2026, continues to draw admiration for its scale, purpose, and impact.

According to Mr. Mohammed, history is unfolding as European Union Ambassadors and participants make their way through Kumasi—the fourth stop on the remarkable 800-kilometer journey—held to commemorate 50 years of the European Union’s existence. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond cycling, symbolizing unity, endurance, and a shared global commitment.

Now on Day Four, the tour has surpassed its halfway mark, covering an impressive 460 kilometers. The delegation received a rousing send-off in Sunyani from the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, and was warmly welcomed in Kumasi by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

Despite the physical demands of the journey, participants described the experience as both challenging and fulfilling, noting that each stretch of the ride contributes to a broader mission of sustainability and unity.

The remaining stages of the tour are scheduled as follows:

  • Thursday, April 16, 2026: Kumasi to Nkawkaw
  • Friday, April 17, 2026: Nkawkaw to Aburi
  • Saturday, April 18, 2026: Final stretch from Aburi to Accra, ending with a grand ceremony at the Netherlands Embassy at 9:30 AM

Mr. Mohammed also underscored the environmental significance of the initiative, revealing that more than 1,000 trees are being planted along the route as part of efforts to promote sustainability and climate awareness.

“This tour is already leaving a powerful legacy and represents a key milestone in Ghana’s evolving recreational sports sector, in line with the vision of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,” he noted.

He stressed that the dedication shown by the ambassadors and cyclists deserves national recognition, as their efforts continue to inspire many across the country.
