FROM HEARTBREAK TO GLORY: Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses Crowned African Champions for the First Time

Cameroon have etched their name into African women’s football history, with the Indomitable Lionesses crowned champions of Africa for the first time after a commanding 3–0 victory over Malawi in the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The historic triumph was secured on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, as Cameroon delivered a powerful performance to finally end decades of near misses and heartbreak on the continental stage.

Marie Gisele Ngah Manga set the tone for Cameroon with the opening goal before Naomi Eto doubled the advantage in the 30th minute. Ngah Manga then completed her memorable night by adding another goal to seal a comprehensive victory for the Lionesses.

The result sparked jubilant celebrations among the Cameroonian players, technical team and supporters, as the five-time finalists finally climbed to the summit of African women’s football.

A Historic First for Cameroon

Cameroon’s triumph marks their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, making them only the fourth nation to lift the prestigious trophy.

The achievement is particularly significant given the disappointment Cameroon had endured in previous finals. The Indomitable Lionesses had finished runners-up in 2004, 2014 and 2016, coming agonisingly close to continental glory on several occasions.

This time, however, there was no heartbreak.

Cameroon produced a remarkable campaign built on resilience, discipline and belief, overcoming some of the strongest teams in the competition on their way to the final.

Nigeria and Morocco Stand in Their Way

The road to the title was anything but easy.

In the quarter-finals, Cameroon produced one of the tournament’s biggest statements by defeating powerhouse Nigeria 1–0, eliminating one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football nations.

The Lionesses then faced host nation Morocco in a tense semi-final. After another hard-fought encounter, Cameroon prevailed on penalties to book their place in the final.

Having overcome Nigeria and Morocco, Cameroon entered the final with confidence—and they left no doubt about their championship credentials.

Malawi’s Historic Run Ends in the Final

For Malawi, reaching the final represented a landmark achievement in its own right.

The Scorchers battled their way to the championship match with determination and ambition, hoping to complete an extraordinary journey by claiming their first continental crown.

But Cameroon proved too strong on the night.

The Lionesses controlled the decisive moments, punished Malawi’s defensive weaknesses and ultimately secured a convincing 3–0 victory to bring the trophy home.

A New Chapter for African Women’s Football

Cameroon’s victory represents more than just a first major title for the Indomitable Lionesses.

It is a defining moment for a team that has repeatedly stood on the brink of history and finally found a way to cross the line.

From the heartbreak of previous finals to defeating Nigeria, overcoming Morocco and dominating Malawi in the final, Cameroon’s 2026 campaign will be remembered as one of courage, consistency and character.

The wait is finally over.

After years of coming close, the Indomitable Lionesses are no longer bridesmaids of African football.

Cameroon are African champions.
