CM Cephas Clinton Fomevor Crowned Champion at 13th President’s Cup Chess Tournament

Accra, August 4, 2025 — Candidate Master (CM) Cephas Clinton Fomevor has been crowned champion of the 13th President’s Cup, Ghana’s most prestigious annual chess tournament, organized by the Ghana Chess Association (GCA).

Held from August 1 to 3 at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra, the event attracted 33 players from across Ghana and beyond, competing for a GHC 12,000 prize pool.

CM Fomevor delivered an outstanding performance, finishing the seven-round tournament unbeaten with five wins and two draws to secure the title. He was closely followed by FM John Kojo Hasford, who finished with 5½ points. Nana Kofi Ampong, Miracle Morris, and Kwasi Kporxah Maxwell completed the top five.

This year’s event saw increased diversity, with players representing countries such as Togo, Nigeria, and the United States. Young talents and female players also made a strong impression, with Singh Ridham named Best Female and Dave Chief Acheampong awarded Best Junior.

The tournament was made possible through the support of key partners, including Prof. Richard Adanu of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and Mr. Rajan Singh of Oceanspray Ghana. Special recognition was given to Air Commodore George Kweku ArkoDadzie, a former GCA President, whose vision helped establish the President’s Cup.

Led by International Arbiter Christiana Ashley as Tournament Director, alongside Rev. Charles Raymond Appiah Tandoh as Deputy Chief Arbiter, the event adhered strictly to FIDE standards.

Following the success of this year’s edition, the GCA has confirmed that the President’s Cup will return in 2026 with an expanded field and continued support from its partners.
