The Captain Barron Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting disability sports in Ghana by donating football equipment and Brentford FC kits to seven organisations supporting persons living with disabilities.
The second annual donation ceremony took place on Friday at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium, where footballs, boots and jerseys sourced through a partnership with English Premier League side Brentford FC were presented to beneficiaries. The initiative was described by the foundation as an act of solidarity aimed at empowering para-athletes rather than an act of charity.
The beneficiary organisations were the Simon Agbotsui Foundation, GOGETDEM and Up Shine Foundation, Mighty Victory Football Club, Skate Soccer Global, the National Amputee Football Team and Ayawaso CP Football Club. Together, these organisations represent a wide range of Ghana’s disability sports community, including amputee football, cerebral palsy football and skate soccer.
Speaking during the presentation, Captain Barron, founder of the Captain Barron Foundation, said the initiative is inspired by a deep desire to support vulnerable members of society through sport.
According to him, helping athletes living with disabilities pursue their sporting dreams gives him hope and personal fulfilment, adding that the success of the foundation’s first donation exercise two years ago motivated them to continue the programme.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the beneficiary organisations, Albert K. Frimpong, founder of Skate Soccer Ghana, expressed gratitude to the Captain Barron Foundation for its continued commitment to disability sports.
He noted that while the donated football boots, jerseys and match balls will directly improve training and competition, the gesture also sends a powerful message that para-athletes deserve the same opportunities and support as their able-bodied counterparts.
Frimpong, who pioneered Skate Soccer in Ghana for footballers living with polio, highlighted the challenges many disability sports organisations face, relying heavily on donations and the dedication of volunteers to sustain their activities. He stressed that consistent support such as this plays a vital role in keeping teams active and competitive.
The Captain Barron Foundation indicated that its vision goes beyond providing sports equipment. The foundation aims to promote inclusion, create equal opportunities for persons living with disabilities and provide platforms for talented athletes to develop and excel.
Friday’s donation marks another milestone in that journey, with the foundation confirming its intention to sustain its partnership with Brentford FC and continue supporting Ghana’s growing para sports movement.
For the athletes representing the seven beneficiary organisations, the donation arrives at an important time, providing much-needed football boots, match-ready balls and quality kits as they prepare for upcoming training sessions and competitions.
