Hill Club to Honour 95-Year-Old Tennis Legend Professor Bannerman Richter at Fetu Afahyɛ Tournament
CAPE COAST, Ghana – The historic city of Cape Coast is set to host a special celebration of tennis, longevity and service when the Hill Club stages the 2026 Cape Coast Fetu Afahyɛ Tennis Tournament on Saturday, September 5.
Organised in collaboration with the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), this year’s tournament will be dedicated to the club’s revered Life Patron, Professor Bannerman Richter, who is approaching his 95th birthday in October.
Professor Richter holds the remarkable distinction of being regarded as Ghana’s oldest active social tennis player, continuing to inspire the tennis community with his passion for the sport and remarkable vitality on court.
The celebration will go beyond his achievements in tennis, recognising his lifelong philanthropy, visionary leadership and commitment to the development of the sport, particularly in the Central Region.
Chairman of the Hill Club, Ken Erskine-Sackey, described Professor Richter as a living example of the club’s motto, “Progress Through Discipline.”
“Professor Richter is a living embodiment of our motto, Progress Through Discipline. He does not just advise us; he leads by example on the court and remains an unfailing pillar of moral and financial support,” Erskine-Sackey said.
He added: “Honouring him while he can still enjoy his flowers is a profoundly proud moment for our club and the entire tennis fraternity.”
As part of the celebrations, the Hill Club will welcome the Accra-based McCartey Hill Club for a competitive inter-club tennis showdown.

The tournament is expected to combine quality tennis with special honorary presentations and a vibrant cultural atmosphere reflecting the spirit of the Fetu Afahyɛ festival.
The event will also provide an opportunity for members of the tennis fraternity, sports enthusiasts and the wider public to celebrate the extraordinary life and contribution of Professor Richter.
National tennis executives, sports personalities, enthusiasts and the general public have been invited to the Hill Club courts, with activities scheduled to begin at 8:00am on Saturday, September 5.
The organisers believe the celebration will serve as a fitting tribute to a man whose dedication to tennis, leadership and service continues to inspire generations.

For the Hill Club and the wider Ghanaian tennis fraternity, the Fetu Afahyɛ Tournament will therefore be more than just a day of competition, it will be a celebration of a living legend and a reminder of the lasting impact of service to sport.
