Referee Maxwell Owusu admits ‘delusion’ in Hearts of Oak vs Elmina Sharks match

Centre referee Maxwell Owusu Mensah has admitted he made errors in his decisions when Accra Hearts of Oak hosted Elmina Sharks in the Ghana Premier league.

The Class 1 referee made several calls on the day that left many thinking about his competencies.

Maxwell Owusu and his assistants awarded a penalty to Accra Hearts of Oak deep into injury time in the first half, a call that delayed the game for more than 5 minutes, Elmina Sharks defender Kingsley Adjei was adjudged to have handled a goal bound shot inside the goal area, but video replays showed the ball hit his shoulder.

The referee made further mistakes when he marched off the wrong player for the penalty offense.

The referee seemed to have disagreed with his Assistant 2, Emmanuel Dei who flagged for a retake of the penalty after Goalkeeper Bawa Martey moved off his line before the penalty kick.

The Second half of the game looked more condensed as Maxwell and his two assistants made calls that got the fans booing at them.

In a remorseful and repentant mood, Referee Maxwell Owusu took to Facebook to Express his worry at the decision, and performance.

Owusu Mensah further believes those were genuine mistakes, and needs another opportunity to correct them

“This was absolutely not a good decision.
I’m not proud of it. A lot of people have been hurt.
I am hurt too”.
