Golden Shuttlers shine in Cairo with four-medal haul at African U-19 Championships

Ghana’s Golden Shuttlers produced a memorable campaign at the 2026 All Africa U-19 Badminton Championships in Cairo, returning from the Egyptian capital with four medals, including a silver medal in the Women’s Doubles.

The Ghanaian junior team announced its medal ambitions early in the championship, making a strong run in the Mixed Team Relay event to reach the semi-finals and secure a bronze medal.

That performance provided the platform for an impressive showing in the individual events, where the Golden Shuttlers registered five quarter-final appearances before advancing to four semi-finals across the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Doubles competitions.

The Ghanaian players continued to battle through a highly competitive field, with the Mixed Doubles pairing securing another bronze medal to further strengthen Ghana’s medal tally.

The biggest breakthrough came in the Women’s Doubles, where Ghana reached the final and secured its best individual result of the championship.

In the gold-medal match, the Ghanaian pair made an encouraging start, winning the opening game against their Mauritian opponents.

But the momentum shifted in the second game as Mauritius fought back strongly. The Ghanaian duo were unable to regain control in the deciding game, eventually losing the contest and having to settle for silver.

Although gold eluded the Golden Shuttlers, the silver medal represented Ghana’s highest individual medal of the championship and completed a four-medal haul that underlined the team’s growing presence on the African junior badminton stage.

‘We tried our best’

Reflecting on the championship after the medal ceremony, Golden Shuttlers team member Alana Faith Sullo said the Ghanaian players gave everything in their pursuit of gold.

“The championship wasn’t easy, especially because we were fighting for gold. We tried our best and did everything we could, but this year, it wasn’t ours. We thank God for giving us the strength throughout the tournament, and we are grateful for what we have been able to achieve.”

Sullo also expressed appreciation to everyone who supported the team throughout its campaign in Cairo.

“I would also like to say thank you to everyone for your support and prayers throughout this tournament. I want to thank our coaches, our parents, our friends and our followers for their support, and above all, I want to thank God for seeing us through this tournament,” she said.

Recognition for Ghanaian players

The championship also brought individual recognition for members of the Ghanaian delegation, with Moslena, Obampoba, Obeng and Racheal receiving souvenirs from the organisers in recognition of their participation and efforts during the competition.

For the Golden Shuttlers, the four-medal haul represents a significant achievement at the 2026 All Africa U-19 Badminton Championships.

More importantly, the experience in Cairo has given Ghana’s young badminton players valuable exposure against some of the continent’s finest junior talents, while providing a platform on which they can build as they continue their development on the international stage.

Ghana leaves Cairo with medals, experience and renewed belief — and the Golden Shuttlers have once again shown that the future of Ghanaian badminton is worth watching.
